Order Placing Members of the Canadian Forces on Active Service (Iran-Iraq)

Whereas the Security Council of the United Nations, by resolution number 619, dated August 9, 1988, established, under its authority, a United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG) to verify, confirm and supervise the cease-fire and withdrawal of the forces of the parties involved in the conflict between Iran and Iraq;

Whereas the Secretary General of the United Nations has asked Canada to provide military observers and communications personnel for UNIIMOG and Canada has undertaken to do so;

And Whereas it appears advisable for Canada to verify, confirm and supervise the cease-fire and withdrawal of the forces of the parties involved in the conflict between Iran and Iraq in consequence of the resolution;

Therefore, Her Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of National Defence, pursuant to paragraph 31(1)(b) of the National Defence Act, is pleased hereby to place on active service beyond Canada

  • (a) officers and non-commissioned members of the Canadian Forces, regular force; and

  • (b) officers and non-commissioned members of the Canadian Forces, reserve force as part of or in immediate support of UNIIMOG.
